Seeing Things Differently

I’ll never tire of hearing the following phrases in session:-

  • “I never thought of it that way……”
  • “Mmmmmm, interesting, that would never have occurred to me…….”
  • “That’s a different way of seeing it……”

One of my clients recently asked me why he couldn’t seem to do the kind of thinking he does in my therapy room on his own. He’s had several lightbulb moments over the past year of therapy, resulting in some significant changes in his family-life, working behaviours, and how he sees himself.

The old cliché of everyone seeing the elephant differently according to the part they’re looking at is so true, particularly in a Group Therapy session. In Group therapy, the client benefits from multiple perspectives in addition to the therapists insights.
